Are we there yet?

The results of the business survey are in and they make for interesting reading.

The survey was part of our research into gathering an up to date database of businesses in the council area. There are approximately 700+ businesses and 300 completed the survey.   So just under half on the database. And the breakdown of them was as follows

  • 4% were sole operators
  • 43% employed 1-4 employees
  • 38% employed 5-19 employees
  • 15% employed 20+ employees

The top four industries were

  • 21% were in retail
  • 12% were in construction
  • 10% Manufacturing
  • 8% in Food and hospitality

The survey investigated three elements: Technology uptake, Staffing and assistance and Networking. These are central elements to being in business and in the case of technology and staffing they are the high cost elements as well.

We asked businesses – “How strongly do you anticipate that your business will be impacted in the next 5 years by technological changes?” While 40% believed technology would have a strong impact, 28% believed it would not impact on their business.  The “right” answer according to the current research is that technology will impact 100% of businesses.

Another interesting result was in the learning, training and support area. We provided a fairly comprehensive list of 18 organisations or programs that are active in this area and 23% of respondents replied that they knew none of them and 36% had not used any of them.  This is concerning as it can be reasonably interpreted to mean that these businesses are operating all on their own.

And in these challenging times we all need support.

The Town is a facilitator and advocate in economic development and through this survey we can identify the strengths of the area, what it means to live and work in Bassendean and we also can see some of our weaknesses and our challenges. The information in this survey will be used to frame the activities of the Town to provide support and assistance where it is most needed.

Keep Australia Beautiful Week – 21-27 August

Along with reducing the number of coffee cups going to landfill the Town is keen for local businesses to get behind the Keep Australia Beautiful Campaign.

We’ll soon see the army of volunteers with their orange bags along road verges but there are many other ways you can help and get involved:

  • Promote the week to your networks.
  • Download the posters and promote it in your businesses and to your customers
  • Look at the simple things in your daily lives to reduce your impact on the environment

It’s up to all of us, community organisations, schools, sporting clubs and the local governments.

O2 Cafe & Need for Feed are Responsible Cafes!

IF you want to save on your morning coffee and make a difference to the environment, then you might like to consider a push by Responsible Cafes.

The volunteer movement encourages venues to offer customers discounts on warm beverages if they bring a re-usable cup. O2 Cafe (Old Perth Rd) and Need for Feed (corner of Colstoun Rd and Guildford Rd) have been quick out of the starting blokes and signed up to offer discounts and help the environment.

Michele Glass, manager of O2 Cafe, Old Perth Road signed up a few months ago and has noticed a steady number of customers who bring their own reusable cups and save 50 cents every time. “We think it’s a great initiative. We’re always trying to minimise waste,” she said.

“We’re still going through too many single-use cups per week and we really want to get that number down” she added.

The Town is a fully paid up member of this movement and strongly encourages all the other cafes and outlets around the town to get on board. With Australians estimated to use one billion takeaway coffee cups every year, through joining up to this initiative with coffee drinkers, cafe owners and our residents we are keen to “change the game on single-use waste by nurturing a culture of reuse”.

NBN is here . . . . .switch on

In parts of Eden Hill anyway! And before you know it, all of Bassendean, Ashfield and the rest of Eden Hill will be hooked up! Including those areas outside of the Council area, like Beechboro, Morley and Kiara, a total of 11,100 households were connected last week.

nbn will undertake a comprehensive communication campaign in areas scheduled to make the switch to the nbn network. This includes local advertising, community information sessions, direct mail and door-to-door service calls to those within the area. You can also find out whether you are eligible to connect by using the Check Your Address function at

But when the NBN announces an area is ready, it does not mean you get the connection automatically.

So, what to do? Homes and businesses should take the following steps:

  1. Contact your preferred phone or internet service provider to discuss your phone and internet requirements.  That’s Telstra, Optus, iinet, TPG and more.
  2. Choose a plan that suits your needs.  These organisations have packages figured out to suit all needs.  There will be a scale in the cost of connecting you up according to the capacity you want.
  3. Order your service over the nbn network as soon as possible.

Please note:

  • If you have a medical alarm or alert (or a family member, carer or friend) you are encouraged to register your details with nbn’s Medical Alarm Register by calling 1800 227 300 or complete the online form at
  • If you have an EFTPOS terminal, fax or alarm system, call the provider of that service (for example your bank) to ask what internet or landline phone services over the NBN will support the device.
  • If your building has an emergency lift phone and/or a fire indicator panel you are encouraged to register your details with nbn so these services can be identified by calling 1800 687 626.
  • There is a Switch-off date as well.  The switch off is approximately 18 months from the switch on date.
  • If you do not place an order for services over the nbn network with your preferred phone or internet service provider before the switch off date for your premises, you will lose access to affected existing internet and landline services.
  • Areas within suburbs will have different switch off dates depending on when the nbn network becomes available to their premises.

New Business Database

The Town is going all out to update the database we have for businesses operating across the Town.  We are literally going out to all the “bricks and mortar” premises. We are visiting all the factories and all the shops in the main precincts of Eden Hill, Ashfield and Bassendean.

But for all you home based operators that’s not so easy.  For most of you there are no signs on the road to say where you are.

But we don’t want you to miss out so, the survey is available to you to fill out on-line – HERE.


As a minimum, the survey will update our database which was originally developed in 2010.  The directory on this web site came from then too and is now well out of date.

The survey asks your opinions and recommendations around running a business.  This helps us to evaluate how you are travelling and learn what are the big hurdles that you are challenged with. It could lead to pulling together a business group, or getting people with similar interests to get together, or we could use it to drive a shared working space somewhere in the Town and there are many more benefits which will emerge over the coming months and years.


Innovator of the Year 2017

How inventive have you been in the last 12 months?  Applications for the WA 2017 Innovator of the Year program are now open.

Award winners will share in a prize pool of $145,000 to help commercialise their innovations, with the overall winner receiving a prize of $75,000.  Finalists and semi-finalists will receive professional assistance in the form of pitch presentation training, one-on-one mentoring, financial forecasting and a legal health check to enhance their prospects of commercialisation.  Finalists will also receive an edited video so they can showcase their innovations to the world.

Winners from last year include an electronic pain assessment tool, which utilises automated facial recognition technology, the world’s first fully automated 3D robotic bricklaying system, an industrial grade threaded nut combined with a rapid release mechanism, Flash flaming of seeds to improve land restoration, Instatruck: an on-demand truck matching service for customers’ with specific delivery requirements and owner/drivers who have delivery capacity.  The ideas and winners are as diverse as our whole economy.

Applications for the 2017 WA Innovator of the Year Program are now open. Applications close at 12:00pm AWST on 6 June 2017.
